Strata + Hadoop World Highlights: New York City, Oct 15-17 2014

What a show!  Strata + Hadoop World New York stepped up to a much larger venue this year, the Javits Center, and it definitely helped to make the show feel like it should – a centerpiece for the Hadoop industry.  The whole experience was first class, none of the crowding from previous years, high-quality keynotes and a party that highlighted the location and feel of the neighborhood.  Unfortunately the Hadoop Hustle run in Central park was rained out; there's always next year!

My personal key takeaways are short and sweet:

Spark, Spark, Spark, Spark!  Everyone is talking about Spark, even people that you think wouldn't care about Spark are talking about it, using it, integrating it.   The attention has moved from Map Reduce and batch processing to in-memory processing, allowing Hadoop users to tackle a whole new set of use-cases.

We are seeing a lot of Spark experimentation and exploration with our customers but we don’t see a lot of production Spark implementations yet, we expect this to change quickly in 2015.   Stay tuned for more Spark related announcement from Zaloni – the Bedrock platform will announce Spark support soon. Congrats to Databricks for orchestrating such rapid adoption rate!

Zaloni stepped up our presence this year and it clearly paid off.  We had more interest from new and existing customers and partners than ever before.   We’ve been attending Strata + Hadoop World for years but this is the first time we setup a full booth with Bedrock demo’s and at times we had people waiting 2-deep to see the demo and ask questions.   Our Zaloni-labeled bottled water was a big hit, over 500 bottles were enjoyed.  You can be sure that we’ll be back even bigger and better next year.

We always like to bring a few engineers to attend the sessions and stay in touch with the latest technology.  Technical sessions on topics like Tachyon, Data Visualization and the Lambda Architecture were great.  Industry focused sessions for Finance and Healthcare were new and a great view of how Hadoop is impacting business today.

Conferences are a lot of work for everyone to prepare for and attend but it’s always worth it in the end.   Thanks for being there with us, let’s do it again next year!
