Self-service is universally available, with ever-expanding tools for users who can't program. People at the Automate level Predictive analysis is routinely used to make optimal business deci‐ sions. The company is responsive to changes from clients and the marketplace. New employees go through a training session that explains the value of data and how the organization is using it. Educational programs bring all staff members up to the level where they can recognize the data they need, seek it out, and incorporate it into visualizations and reports with the help of IT staff. Processes at the Automate level Processes and best practices are fully defined at the corporate level, and most are routinely followed. The information architecture and associated standards are fully defined and implemented. Continuous development and integration are in place in all develop‐ ment efforts where they are useful. Audits and conformance are automated as much as possible and incorporated into continuous development. Biggest challenge of the Automate level Technologically, this is the time to build advanced capabilities such as text mining, machine learning, forecast modeling, statistical model building, and prescriptive analytics. It's also a good point at which to develop customizable dashboards and other tools for easy real-time visualization. Consider investing in the development of need-based user interface and user experience design for different functional roles (sales, marketing, operations, HR). Finding ade‐ quate IT experts to continue these activities can be a challenge. But the activities can take you to the next and highest level, Optimize. Level 5: Optimize At this stage, your company is a highly responsive business that fully adapts to changes based on streamlined analytics. You are running a full-scale, self-organizing data lake with machine learning algo‐ rithms. There is true democratization of big data.
